Bilingual Topics

SPHR 541 Bilingual Topics in Communication Sciences and Disorders

As part of the program, you will participate in this course related to Bilingual Topics for Assessment and Intervention.  This course is a two credit graduate course that everyone will be registered for.  It will meet approximately 8 or 9 times and will be taught by Lissette, Nick, and Stephanie at a location in La Floresta, which will be walking distance for most of you.  The class will typically be from 8:30-11:30.

All students receive two graduate credits for the course and professionals can earn ASHA CEU's through it as well.

Cultural Considerations

SPHR 510 Cultural Considerations in Ecuador

This course includes the academic and language experience components of the program.  It also includes the clinical component of the program for participants who do not need supervised clinical hours. It includes a group meeting for one hour per week (after the bilingual course), Spanish language classes or alternatives, site visits, guest lectures, and clinical experiences.

The goals of seminars will be to familiarize the students with the Ecuadorean culture, to learn more about differing views of characteristics, assessment, and treatment of communication disorders, and to learn skills related to working as bilingual speech-language pathologists in the United States. In addition there will be site visits to institutions that serve individuals with communication disabilities: schools, hospitals, clinics.

This course is four credits for non-PSU participants and two credits for PSU graduate students.  PSU graduate students register for a total of four credits as well, but two of the credits are graduate-program specific.
