GETTING TO -UIO- QUITO, Airport

Airline baggage regulations generally permit you two pieces of check-in luggage and one carry *on bag. Most airlines have penalty charges for extra luggage, which they will enforce at their own discretion, but you should not take a chance. (Remember, you're traveling light!)

Ecuadorian airport officials are now selectively enforcing a weight restriction on baggage when you fly from Ecuador. We have not been able to confirm if this regulation is still in effect. The maximum weight you can leave with is 30 kilos = 70 pounds. This is apparently at each airline’s discretion. It is YOUR responsibility to check with your airline to see what limitations are in effect.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I LAND IN QUITO?

You'll be landing northeast of Quito at the airport. We collect your flight and arrival information to coordinate arrivals and inform your host family. You will go directly home with your host family. After you go through passport control and customs procedures at the airport, you will leave directly to a large waiting area. Keep whatever papers you receive as you go through Customs & Immigration; you will need those papers to leave the country.

Your host family or a friend of the family will pick you up if you arrive on the Friday or Saturday right before the program starts.  If you arrive earlier, you will have to find your own travel from the airport accommodations until the host family contract starts (of course we can advise you on how to do so).

Inform the local program coordinator if you have a flight delay or cancellation. That way your host family does not have to wait for you at the airport if it is not necessary.
