FOOD AND DRINK PRECAUTIONS

Be careful what and where you eat and drink. Tap water in Ecuador is not safe to drink unless it has been treated or boiled. If you‘re not sure that the water had been boiled, drink bottled water. You may want to bring a water purification pump with you.  We don‘t recommend eating food purchased from street vendors. Be sure to wash fruits and vegetables with bottled water or peel them.

You will definitely want to be very cautious with what you eat and drink. .

Some recommend that you take probiotics with you and take them daily to help your digestion.

ILLNESS

If you become ill, let your host family know. Most common illnesses are the result of bacteria and result in diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms should calm down in two to three days. Be sure to rehydrate and rest.

Avoid taking medicine that stops diarrhea like immodium. You want bacteria to find its way out.

HYGIENE, BATHROOM, AND GARBAGE BINS

Ecuador has different procedures for disposing of toilet paper. Some families throw paper in the toilet, others throw it in the garbage bin because of plumbing needs. Please ask your host family which method you should use. Outside of the home, bring your own toilet paper and dispose of it in the garbage.

Don't put tampons in the toilet.

Many of our previous student participants have come to the realization that Ecuadorians pay more attention to cleanliness than many North Americans. More important than what you wear is how clean you are. Please shower daily, use deodorant (if needed), and wear clean clothing. If you dress inappropriately or if you are unkempt or unclean, you may not be criticized openly; however, it is not acceptable to most professionals in clinical settings and families and is considered an insult to them.
