Keep in mind that you‘ll be going from near sea level (if you are coming from Oregon) to 9,500 feet (over 2,800 meters) altitude when you land in Quito. That‘s quite a change, even for the most physically fit individuals. Take it very slow during those first few days; otherwise, you could wind up light-headed and dizzy, and who knows what else. Be careful about drinking alcohol in the first few days. Alcohol can have a devastating effect if you‘re not used to the altitude.  Also, the same person may respond to the altitude differently on visits so don't assume you won't be affected if you haven't been in the past.

If you go from Quito to lower altitude regions, you need to be prepared for high altitude effects upon return.

Even though it might take you some time to become accustomed to the altitude, think about the bright side: you‘ll be in great shape when you return to Oregon!
